Transformer
Last night at around 5am there was this loud clap of thunder. I just rolled over, said the hell with it. A minute later Tad comes to my bedroom and tells me a Transformer is on fire across the way. So I get up and look. Yep. It's on fire. The power is on in our place, but it's dark on the otherside of the spillway.

I called MLGW and reported it while Tad was looking for his power bill so that he could call the emergency line. I just called Billing and pressed the option for "I'm on fire or I know someone/something on fire".

I reported it to the lady and she told me to call the fire dept. She couldn't give me the fire dept's number, so referred me to 911... I hate calling 911, but I did it anyways.

I told them where it was and during the call I told the dispatcher that it looked like it was actually going out. She sent someone anyways. Not 3-4 minutes later (GO Cordova Fire dept!!!) I saw red lights and the fire truck pulled up. I told them where the fire was, but had since gone out. They went scouting to make sure it was ok. I beat myself up for calling 911 and there not *currently* being an emergency.

Anyhow. I woke up at noon today. MLGW is out replacing the transformer. You can see them on the pole. Forgive my camera being shittier than a phone camera.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs).PCBs belong to a broad family of man-made organic chemicals known as chlorinated hydrocarbons. PCBs were domestically manufactured from 1929 until their manufacture was banned in 1979. Well I guess they can't be used any longer.

Luckily Dow has picked up the ball since 1979 and kept people in my area flush in dioxins to take the place of the PCBs (which are probably still abundant in this area (dump virtually wherever you like as long as you pave over it)).

we tried to call our local fire dept. recently to report a leave burning that didn't look contained. We got a freakin answering machine!! So when I told a couple friends about it they all said, "you must need to call 911." I hate the idea of calling 911 for things like that. I fear that I'm clogging the lines for someone that is having an emergency. Anyway, when we drove by it again someone was out there talking to the owner of the house and then they moved the fire back a ways, but it still seemed like a bad idea, esp. since they had a sign in their yard that said, "Warning: High Voltage" nearby. It was ridiculous to us.
